What is an Au Pair?

"Au Pair" literally means "on par" or an equal. Au Pairs are cultural exchange students who live with a British family so they can learn English and get to know more about the British way of life and its culture.

The object is for the aupairs to treated as a family member and become integrated into the family. In exchange for this cultural experience, the au pair helps the host family with light house work and childcare.

The au pair is a male or female aged between 17 and 27 years old from all EU countries and certain non EU countries.

  • An au pair works 25 hours per week, 5 days per week, up to 2 nights babysitting and he/she has 2 free days off.
  • Au Pairs receive pocket money of a minimum £70 per week, free board and lodgings
  • The au pair helps with light housework and will help care for children. Please note an au pair is not a substitute nanny and has no qualifications in childcare.
  • The au pair will pay for their transport to the UK
  • Some Au Pairs can drive but we advise a couple of driving lessons to ensure they are safe to drive in the UK.
  • Au Pairs pay for their own English classes. However in some cases the family may contribute or even pay for the full amount as a perk to the au pair.
  • Please remember the more you put into your relationship with your au pair the more you will get out!
